Alix Kogan – Owner


Alix has been involved in the building industry since he was a child. Both his father and brother are established builders in the Chicago area and through them Alix has learned a lot about the construction business. Alix obtained a degree from Northeastern Illinois University and spent many years in school focusing on business and management. Along with being passionate about his trade, Alix shows his dedication in how he runs his business. Alix utilizes forward-thinking systems to allow for fluid business management and communication in the home building process. On an annual basis, Alix budgets time for continued education, seminars and workshops in order to stay abreast of the latest technologies and methods of construction management.

Alix has been building quality homes in the Durango area for the past 10 years. He has been and continues to be personally involved with every client and their project to ensure that “Kogan” quality is always met. He is passionate about architectural design and producing unique design solutions specific to each client’s needs. He is also committed to learning about green and sustainable techniques and utilizing them to add value to each project. Alix’s goal is to provide each client with the best possible experience building their dream home, whether they live in Durango or Singapore!

Scott Smith – Chief Financial Officer and Project Manager

Scott Smith moved to Durango after a ski trip with his family where he and his wife fell in love with the area. After researching a number of builders, Scott chose Kogan Builders to build his mountain home. Scott was so pleased with the company’s building process that upon completion of the home, he accepted a position with Kogan Builders as the Financial Officer and a Project Manager. Scott has been with the company for four years and looks forward to many more years of helping clients build their dream homes. Scott came to Kogan Builders with an extensive corporate and financial background. He also coordinated several corporate expansion projects but he prefers the satisfaction derived from helping people build custom homes.

Bruce Daniel – Project Manager

As a Colorado native, Bruce has always chosen to work with companies that share his values of natural material aesthetics and practices. With twenty five years of high-end residential building expertise, Bruce’s construction management career is highlighted with many high visibility projects. For seven years Bruce oversaw the construction and purchasing for over three hundred homes in Castle Rock, Colorado. Bruce then began the purchasing for the prestigious Cordillera project in Vail Colorado where he controlled the construction of fifty custom residential properties ranging in price up to eleven million dollars. Bruce has been with Kogan Builders since 2004 and manages the majority of Kogan Builders projects. When not on-site or with his clients, you will usually find him flying his plane or outside with his horses.

Kjersten Tomer – Interior Design

From drafting construction documents and details for new construction and remodels/additions to specifying fixtures, finishes, surfaces, home furnishings and color consultation; Kjersten brings 13 years of experience in all phases of interior and architectural design to the Kogan Builders design team. She has also enjoyed planning events, fundraising, and advertising for previous employers and utilizes these skills in marketing and public relations with Kogan Builders.

A Colorado native, she attended both Ohio State University and Rocky Mountain College of Architecture and Design, graduating Summa cum Laude with a BFA in Interior Design; emphasis on Green Design and Environmental Psychology. As a former Planning Commissioner and member of the Green Building Task Force in Telluride; she enjoys being active in the community. Having recently relocated to Durango, her residential design work includes homes in central Ohio, Evergreen, Aspen, Telluride, Rico and Mancos. Her commercial design work can be seen in downtown Denver.

She lives on a cattle ranch in Breen with her two dogs and enjoys all the Four Corners has to offer; hiking in the desert, boating, skiing and yoga.

Marcia Day – Accounting Assistant

Marcia joined Kogan Builders in July 2010. Marcia’s broad experience in Accounts Receivable enables her to assist with the daily accounting functions. She also provides support to the office team, project managers and site superintendents.

She moved to the Durango area in 2004 after more than 30 years of living on the front-range of Colorado, where she was a professional collector for a major corporation. Marcia decided to trade the corporate lifestyle for a more rural setting where she enjoys riding her motorcycle, camping, hiking and snow shoeing.

Cindy Smart – Director of Sales and Marketing

Cindy has been involved in sales, marketing and technology for many years. She is a true renaissance woman, having worked as a professional jeweler, gemologist, artist, boat builder and adventure seeker. After traveling most of her life she moved to Durango more than 20 years ago and established herself in the community as a patron of the arts and tireless volunteer.

She has served as an Executive Officer of the Home Builders Association and is currently the Secretary. She is Chair of the Parade of Homes and serves on several other building related committees as well. She recently received the Bill Bader Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in the building industry and in the community. She has served on many of the City and County Boards and Commissions.

Cindy is a Colorado Master Gardener and is President of the Durango Botanical Society. She is a senior Naturalist with the Durango Nature Studies Center. She also devotes time as a Docent for the Durango Art Center. In her spare time she teaches children’s art and its relationship to nature in her studio at home. Her most ardent pupils are her three grandchildren.

She and her husband Jim spend their spare time searching for items to repurpose into art and furniture. They have one daughter who owns Smart Enterprises which is the company she and her husband founded. Cindy is still Vice President of Social Media at Smart Enterprises which allows her to continue working in the family business.
