It’s been an unusual early summer with a record amount of rain, snow in the high country and swollen rivers. But we’re pleasantly hot and dry now, the sun is shining and summer is finally taking hold. Summer is when the music spills out onto the streets from the Diamond Belle Saloon, jazz can be heard on any evening at the Cyprus Cafe and delightful patios from a number of fine restaurants offer outdoor dining. Main Avenue has a constant stream of shoppers, the Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Train is booked and the river runs high with rafters, tubing parties, fly fishermen and kayakers.
We live in a destination town. It’s an area that people from all over the world want to spend their vacations. Southwest Colorado at this time of year encompasses so many activities you could spend weeks, if not years trying to cover all the fun things to do and places to visit.
To inspire those who may visit Durango and the surrounding area, the Kogan gang compiled a short list of their favorite summer activities and their chosen outdoor dining experience. We’re a pretty active bunch, so if you need some ideas and a place to start when you’re planning your summer visit we can help. While some of these activities may require a personal invitation (we’d be happy to have you join us) and could be anywhere during the summer, the preferences are especially fine in our neck of the woods…here you go:
Chris- “A hot day tubing on the Animas River.” His favorite summer dining- “Fresh trout from Taylor Lake (at the top of Kennebec Pass) cooked over a campfire.”
Colleen-“Flower gardening!” and her favorite outdoor dining, “Eolus on the upstairs patio.”
Ryan-“To beat our record of camping under the stars” and the summer patio where Ryan and his wife love to dine is the Cyprus Café.
Kylie- “Camping in the high country!” and her favorite summer dining, “take-out picnic by the river from Zia Taqueria!”
Marcia- “Riding my motorcycle and walking my dogs in the woods.” A summer dining experience wouldn’t be complete without a night of “S’mores over a campfire!”
Laurie- “Definitely hiking in the San Juans with the alpine flowers in bloom!” and the favorite eating experience is, “a picnic anywhere in the high country.”
Scott- Being the avid cyclist and riding the famous Iron Horse Bicycle Classic numerous times, it’s not surprising that Scott’s favorite activity is, “Cycling over the mountain passes” and then his favorite dining, “summer evening on my deck, music playing, and the company of my wife after we’ve been cycling.”
Last but certainly not least; Alix- “Being a new dad, I’m looking forward to spending quiet evenings burping my new baby boy!” And his favorite summer dining- “BBQ in my backyard!”
